Neurofeedback - Frequently Asked Questions

Does Neurofeedback “cure” symptoms, disorders, or conditions?

In the case of organic brain disorders and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the goal of treatment is getting the brain to function to its potential, rather than curing the underlying condition. Problems of disregulation or the inability to shift between arousal states are not a diseases to be cured. The goal of Neurofeedback is self-regulation, and the ability to self-regulate may very well be a complete remedy for the symptoms experienced by the client.

Who can benefit from Neurofeedback?

Individuals of any age can benefit from EEG training. Neurofeedback can help a variety of childhood problems including attention deficits and other forms of disruptive and disturbing behaviors. Neurofeedback can assist adolescents who struggle with anxiety and depression or from drug and alcohol use. Neurofeedback has also been effective in helping to optimize brain function in those with memory deficits, including those with various forms of dementia and/or cognitive disturbances.

For adults, Neurofeedback can alleviate symptoms of physical and emotional problems such as migraines, depression, anxiety, self-medication (food, drugs, alcohol, prescription meds abuse) or PTSD. Neurofeedback can help anyone maintain good brain function as they age. Peak performers, such as athletes, executives, entertainers, and first responders, also use EEG training to enhance their abilities in sports, business, the arts, and public safety/service.

How is Neurofeedback done?

Sensors are attached to the scalp (with a paste or gel) that detect brain waves, the electronic signature of brain activity. Treatment is painless and does not involve the application of any voltage or current to the brain, and it is entirely non-invasive.

A computer processes the brain waves and extracts certain information from them. We show you the ebb and flow of your brain waves, and the specific information we obtain from them, in the form of a video game or your favorite movie.

We instruct you how to play the video game, or watch a movie, using only your brain waves. (Everyone can do it.)  Placement of the electrodes on the scalp and the brain wave frequencies that we reward are specific to each individual.
